HOW PATTY AND THE PANDEMIC CAME TO BE

Nicole was just 6 years old when SARS-CoV came to Canada. Nicole’s own frustrations and fears towards a lack of understanding – about the virus, her general health, or the world around her – experienced throughout her youth, are part of what drove her to seek out a medical education. Nicole believes that knowledge helps give one power over their own life and as a result, can greatly alleviate stress.

Now, 17 years later, there is a new coronavirus, and her own awareness and understanding are what comforts her whenever new rules and restrictions are put in place. However, seeing her young nephew, Adam, and reflecting on all of the rites of passage of childhood that he – and the rest of the “COVID-19 Kids” – will be missing out on, she couldn’t help but be taken back to the times when she was just a child and struggling with something similar.

As such, Nicole had the idea to create a simple, fun, and relatable children’s book that empowers children through education, and creates a feeling of being in this together – as one of “Patty’s pals”. In creating “Patty and the Pandemic” – with the support of her classmates, mentors, and community – Nicole aims to create an even larger community of all ages, where everyone has the privilege of feeling educated, empowered and ready to “defeat the bad bug” – together!

THE TEAM

DR. PETER ADAMSON, OOnt, MD, FRCSC, FACS

Nicole’s mentor, and an accomplished physician, professor, author and humanitarian. Recalling her many discussions regarding the changes in healthcare due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Nicole asked Dr. Adamson to write the foreword for “Patty and the Pandemic”. She was quickly reminded of Dr. Adamson’s love for being a father and grandfather – who reads countless books to his own children and grandchildren. Together, they enjoyed perfecting and finalizing each verse, and adding finishing touches to make the book as child-friendly and fun as possible.

DR. JOANNE KEARON, MD, MSc

A senior resident in Public Health and Preventive Medicine, and Nicole’s clinical skills tutor in medical school. Joanne provided valuable edits to the book, and insights to the current Public Health priorities, which ensured confidence in the quality of the content taught in the book.
